Fundraising
How do I become a Hero?
1. Set yourself a goal
How far are you aiming to go this September? Set yourself a physical challenge and clock up as many minutes as you can.
2. Decide on what you will do
You can choose any activity you like – wheeling, walking, running, virtual tennis, wheelchair basketball – the choice is all yours!
3. Create your fundraising page and spread the word
Sign up and create your fundraising page, tell everyone what you are doing and why.
4. Track your activity
Track your achievements and add them to your page so everyone can see.
When can I start fundraising?
As soon as you sign up and set-up your personal page. Fundraising will stay open until 1 October 2021, so you will have plenty of time to achieve your goal.
How do I become a successful fundraiser?
Here are our top tips for getting the most out of your fundraising:
- Personalise your fundraising page - Add a photo and tell people why you are raising money for the Be a Hero challenge – having a photo makes your page 23% more engaging, and a page summary makes it 36% more engaging!
- Aim high with your fundraising goal – The sky is the limit! Aim high when you set up your fundraising goal and don’t be afraid to increase it through September. This will motivate you to work hard for your goal, and you’ll likely end up doing better than you originally thought. It also encourages people to give more - pages with a fundraising goal raise 46% more than those without!
- Share your fundraising page – Share your page with all your friends, family and colleagues across social media, email and across your networks. The more you share, the more people engage with your goal, and the more likely you are to reach it.
- Send reminders by e-mail– it’s a good idea to send reminders to keep your fundraising in the front of people’s minds, and sending emails means you can engage with people that aren’t on social media.
- Keep your supporters updated on your progress and encourage others – your family, friends and colleagues will be inspired to support you when they see how hard you are working. You may even convince them to take part in the Be a Hero challenge themselves!
- Thank everyone who has supported you - let your supporters know that their donation has been noticed and appreciated. You can thank your supporters by email, social media or via your fundraising page.
- It’s not over until it’s over – About 20% of donations come in after an event has ended. Make sure you follow up after your BAH participation with an update about how you did.

Does my activity have to take place in a NeuroMoves Gym?
No, you can do your activity wherever you want (e.g. in a NeuroMoves gym, at home or outside). The only thing you need to do is set yourself a goal and go for it!
However, Spinal Cord Injuries Australia encourages every one of our wonderful fundraisers to follow government guidelines when taking part in the Be a Hero 2021 challenge.
How do I get a Be a Hero Thank You Package?
Once you raise $100, we’ll send you an official Be a Hero Thank You Package! Be aware that with the current lockdown there may be some delays in delivery. We thank you for your patience!
Where will your money go?
The money you raise will help to support Spinal Cord Injuries Australia's national exercise therapy program, NeuroMoves. This highly specialised exercise therapy service has been helping people to do more than they ever thought. We listen to everyone’s individual goals and aspirations, then use all our resources to try to make these a reality. Whether it is to attend our community gym and fitness program, or getting involved with our Locomotor Training program.
Our specialised NeuroMoves staff provide a safe and supportive community for spinal and neuro clients to undertake evidence-based and client-centred practice, to enable over 700 people each year to achieve life-enhancing goals and reach their full potential.
To run our NeuroMoves program successfully, we require highly specialised exercise equipment, which is very expensive. The funds raised during the Be a Hero campaign will be used to purchase equipment for our NeuroMoves gyms across Australia so we can provide our specialised services at all of our clinics across Australia.
In addition to fundraising for new equipment, this year a proportion of our Be a Hero fundraising effort will go to a ‘Client Support Fund’. Without any funding assistance, these clients have limited access to the essential therapy services that they require to improve their physical condition and achieve their goals.
With your generosity, we will be closer to meeting our equipment needs, and support our clients.
Are there any registration or participation fees?
No, signing up for Be a Hero 2021 is free!

Activity tracking
How do I track my activity?
JustGiving, the fundraising platform the Be a Hero campaign uses, is partnered with Strava, which means you can link your fundraising page to Strava. Strava is a training app which tracks and records your activities. Once you connect your fundraising page to Strava, your page will be updated every time you complete an activity. This is an easy way to show your supporters how hard you are working to reach your goal!
What if I don't want to use a tracking app?
If you don’t want to use a fitness app, you can still easily keep track of your activities through your fundraising page. You can do this via the following steps:
